Dr. Olga Husson, epidemiologist and Professor Dr. Winette van der Graaf, medical oncologist, aim to develop an instrument to assess health-related quality of life among sarcoma patients for use in research and clinical care.
Background: Information on survival only is insufficient to determine the actual benefit of a treatment. Therefore, it is important to assess treatment effectiveness both in terms of so-called objective outcomes (e.g., recurrence, response and survival) and in terms of subjective patient reported outcomes including health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
To date, high-quality HRQoL data of sarcoma patients are sparse. The "Soft Tissue and Bone Sarcoma Group" (STBSG) of the "European Organisation for Research and Treatment in Cancer" (EORTC) is therefore planning clinical studies to evaluate the impact of new treatments on health-related Quality of Life in sarcomas.
